Sport Lives in Peace: Cambodia Set the Standard, Turning the SEA Games Into a Benchmark — Not Just an Event

Looking back at Cambodia’s preparation for the 2023 SEA Games, it is evident that the effort went far beyond a simple expression of national pride. The event became a historic opportunity for Cambodia to redefine its image and demonstrate its capacity on both the regional and international stage. Despite limitations in sports infrastructure and outdated facilities, the government committed substantial resources to deliver an event that met the expectations of ASEAN’s premier sporting competition. Cambodia prioritized the Games by upgrading transportation systems, renovating venues, improving security, and enhancing accommodations for athletes and officials.

These investments produced a well-organized and memorable SEA Games that highlighted the unity and ambition of the Cambodian people. The success was reflected in creative promotional campaigns, a culturally rich opening ceremony, and the commitment of thousands of youth volunteers. According to Kiripost, the 32nd SEA Games reached more than 600 million viewers worldwide across television and social media platforms.

Beyond organizational success, Cambodia also introduced significant benefits for participants and spectators. The Games were free for all, as the government covered food and accommodation for foreign athletes, coaches, and delegates, provided free tickets for spectators, and granted free broadcast rights to local and international media networks. These gestures reinforced Cambodia’s message of openness, hospitality, and solidarity.

It is also important to note that Cambodia hosted the SEA Games while simultaneously serving as ASEAN Chair and Para Games Cambodia, a role requiring substantial diplomatic and administrative attention. Managing these responsibilities at the same time could have strained national capacity, yet Cambodia delivered effectively on both fronts. This demonstrated growing institutional capability and a strong commitment to projecting a positive international image.

While discussions continue about China’s contribution to the success of the Games, this narrative often overlooks Cambodia’s leadership throughout the process. Cambodian teams conceptualized the overall creative direction, drafted detailed plans, and presented key proposals. China’s role was to support the implementation of these ideas through technical expertise, including the use of drones and other equipment. The partnership was built on coordination and shared effort rather than financial influence alone.

As neighboring countries prepare for the 33rd SEA Games, their extensive experience in hosting regional events should be reflected in their preparations. Cambodia’s successful execution of the “Celebrating Cambodia 2024” event, carried out entirely through national effort without external support, stands as a strong example of what dedicated planning and local leadership can achieve.
